The Greenville Jazz Collective Jazz Underground series presents pianist Keith Davis performing “Jazz Conspiracy: Free and Uncensored” with fellow musical explorers Ron Brendle on bass and Al Sergel on drums.
The piano trio has a long and important history in jazz. Many of the greatest jazz trios, like those of Bill Evans, Ahmad Jamal, Keith Jarrett, and even The Bad Plus were known for their treatment of standards, along with presenting innovative original compositions.
Keith and the guys will bring their own flavor to this tradition by presenting a wide-ranging program of original music, ranging from straight ahead modern jazz to free improvisation. This program is music that you won’t hear everyday around town!
The best original jazz always has a sense of history about it. Keith is not only a jazz composer and performer, but as an educator he also teaches college level classes on the history of jazz and jazz piano. Ron and Al recently performed at the Jazz Underground tribute to Ornette Coleman (featuring music going back almost 70 years). So even if the music is new, you’ll hear a lot of roots and history!
To play like this, it always helps when the musicians know and trust each other. And having known each other for over 20 years, you’ll hear that wonder when this trio together, as of one mind, take the music in a fun, adventurous direction. You’ll want to be there to hear that!
They’ll be performing in our venue, the Coffee Underground Theater, which is an intimate listening room which also serves homemade desserts, delicious coffee from beans roasted on premises, and an assortment of teas, wine, and cocktails.
